1

Book early — especially for weekends

The best removal teams in London get booked up 3–4 weeks in advance for Friday and Saturday slots, and even further ahead at month-end. Even if your moving date isn't confirmed, a provisional booking can be held.

2

Move mid-week and mid-month for the best price

Monday to Thursday moves are typically 10–15% cheaper than Friday and weekend moves, and mid-month dates are less in demand than month-end. If you have flexibility, the savings can be significant.

3

Declutter before you pack — not after

Every item you move costs money in time, space and fuel. A ruthless declutter before packing is the highest-ROI activity in the entire move process. Donate, sell, give away or dispose — but do it before the boxes come out.

4

Use the right box for the right item

Books go in small boxes (they're heavy). Bedding and pillows go in large boxes (they're light). Never put heavy items in large boxes — the bottom will give out and the contents will be damaged.

5

Pack vertically for fragile items

Plates, bowls and dinner sets should be packed vertically on their edge — like records in a crate — not stacked flat. Vertical packing distributes pressure evenly and dramatically reduces the risk of breakage.

6

Label boxes on the side, not the top

When boxes are stacked in a van or in a room, only the sides are visible. Label every box on at least two sides with the room and a brief contents description.

7

Take meter readings at both properties

Photograph energy meter readings at the old property just before you leave and at the new property when you arrive. This creates a clear record that prevents billing disputes with energy suppliers.

8

Book a parking bay suspension early

In most London boroughs, you need to apply at least 5 working days before your moving date. Some councils require longer. Leave parking planning too late and you may have no legal option outside the property on moving day.

9

Create a 'first night' box

Pack a box containing everything you need for the first evening and morning: kettle, mugs, coffee, bedding, phone charger, toiletries, a change of clothes, pain killers and a takeaway menu. Load it last so it comes off the van first.

10

Photograph all electronic connections before dismantling

Before disconnecting your TV, hi-fi, gaming setup or computer, take detailed photos of all the cable connections. This turns a 2-hour puzzle at the new address into a 10-minute reconnection job.

11

Wrap furniture legs individually

Furniture legs scratch floors and walls during moves. Wrap each leg individually in bubble wrap or moving blankets. Apply adhesive felt pads before the move and replace them at the new property.

12

Use wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes

Wardrobe boxes are the single most time-saving piece of moving kit. Clothes stay hanging, stay crease-free and transfer in under 5 minutes per wardrobe. They're available to hire or buy from most removal companies.

13

Seal bottles before packing

Wrap the top of every bottle and tube in cling film before replacing the lid. This prevents leaks even if items are on their side. A leaking bottle of olive oil or bleach can ruin an entire box.

14

Set up HMRC and DVLA first

HMRC and the DVLA should be among your first address changes. An incorrect DVLA address on your driving licence is a £1,000 fine under the Road Traffic Act. Your tax code and national insurance records both feed from HMRC's address.

15

Set up Royal Mail redirection

Even the most thorough address change process misses some organisations. Royal Mail redirection from royalmail.com forwards all post from your old address for 3, 6 or 12 months. It's the best safety net for the post-move period.

16

Reserve the goods lift in apartment blocks

Most apartment blocks only have one goods lift. On a busy moving day, several flats may be moving simultaneously. Reserve the goods lift directly with building management at least a week before your move — some buildings have specific time slots and a waiting list.

17

Drain appliances before the van arrives

Defrost the fridge-freezer at least 24 hours before moving day. Run the washing machine on a spin cycle to drain it fully. Dishwashers should be run through a drain cycle. Wet appliances cannot be transported safely.

18

Change your locks on day one

Change the locks at your new home on completion or move-in day. You have no way of knowing how many copies of the existing keys exist or who has them. A new lock set for a standard front door costs £30–£80 plus a locksmith's fee.

19

Protect your floors with cardboard

Lay large sheets of cardboard along the main walking routes through both properties before any items are moved. This is especially important on wooden and laminate floors, which scratch easily under the feet of heavy furniture.

20

Keep children and pets in one room

During the loading and unloading process, keep children and pets in one room with a closed door. The constant movement of removal teams and boxes through the house is stressful and potentially dangerous for small children and animals.

21

Photograph the property on arrival

Before a single item is moved into the new property, photograph every room, wall, ceiling, floor and fitted item. This is your check-in record and your primary defence against unfair deposit deductions at move-out.

22

Buy insurance for high-value items

Standard Goods in Transit insurance covers items up to a per-item limit that may be less than the value of your most valuable possessions. Declare any items worth more than £1,000 to your removal company before moving day to ensure appropriate cover.

23

Always get a written confirmation

Any removal booking should be confirmed in writing — by email, by SMS or by a formal booking confirmation document. The written confirmation should include date, time, price, addresses and what's included. Never rely on a verbal agreement alone.

24

Have cash for gratuities

A tip for a removal team that has worked hard is always appreciated and never expected. £10–£20 per person for a day's work is a reasonable guide. Have cash available rather than relying on card payment facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book your removal company early — at least 3 weeks before your moving date. This is followed closely by a thorough declutter, which reduces the volume to move and therefore the time and cost. Address changes (especially HMRC and DVLA) should also start early as they take time to process.
Start packing rooms you don't use daily at least 2 weeks before moving day. The kitchen (the most complex room to pack) should be started 1–2 weeks before. Leave bedding, towels, kitchen essentials and daily-use items until the last 24 hours.
A first night box should contain everything you need for the first 12–24 hours in the new home: kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, bedding, pillows, a change of clothes, toiletries, phone charger, medications, pain relief, and something to eat. This box should be loaded last onto the van so it comes off first.
Tipping is not expected but always appreciated. £10–£20 per person for a full day's work is a reasonable guide for a team that has worked hard. Cash is best.
