How to Move House More Sustainably
Reuse Boxes, Don't Buy New
Before buying boxes, ask friends who've recently moved, check Freecycle and Nextdoor, visit your local supermarket loading bay (early morning), or hire reusable plastic removal crates.
Wrap in What You Already Own
Bubble wrap is petroleum-based plastic. Instead, wrap fragile items in clothing, towels and tea towels. Old newspapers work for additional padding.
Donate Before You Move
Every item you don't move has zero moving carbon footprint. Carry out a thorough declutter at least 4 weeks before. Some charities (British Heart Foundation, Emmaus) offer free furniture collection.
Dispose Responsibly After the Move
Don't leave furniture on the pavement — it's illegal. Your local council's bulky waste service is free or low-cost. Items in good condition can be listed on Freecycle or Facebook Marketplace for free collection within hours.
