London Parking Restrictions on Moving Day: A Complete Guide

Parking is the aspect of a London move that most people underestimate. Get it wrong and you could face a fixed penalty notice, a damaged van and — worst of all — a delayed move. This guide covers everything you need to know.

Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs)

Most of Inner London is covered by Controlled Parking Zones where parking is restricted to permit holders during certain hours. The specific hours, days and permit categories vary by zone and by borough. The most restrictive zones operate Monday to Saturday, 8:30am to 6:30pm; the least restrictive operate for just a few hours. Before your move, check the signs on both sides of the road outside both properties.

Parking Bay Suspensions

A parking bay suspension allows you to temporarily reserve a parking bay outside your property on moving day. You apply to the local council, who suspend the bay (marking it with temporary No Parking signs) for a specified period — typically 8 hours to a full day. The cost is typically £50–£90 per bay per day. Most councils require at least 5 working days' notice, and popular dates book up fast.

Loading Bays and Double Yellow Lines

Double yellow lines prohibit parking at all times, but loading (actively loading or unloading) is usually permitted for up to 20 minutes unless loading restriction plates are present alongside the yellow lines. On single yellow lines, loading is typically permitted when the time restriction shown on the plate is not in force. Our drivers know these rules and follow them.

Common Mistakes

Relying on hazard lights: Hazard lights do not give you permission to park illegally. Traffic wardens in London are unmoved by them.

Not checking both addresses: You may have sorted parking at your old address but forgot to check the new one. Check and plan both.

Applying too late: Leaving a suspension application until the week of the move often results in no availability. Apply as soon as you have a confirmed moving date.

How We Help

Our team can advise on parking requirements for any address we're working at, based on our local knowledge. We carry relevant signage to identify loading zones and always have a plan B if primary parking is unavailable. For critical parking situations, we recommend applying for a formal suspension and we'll confirm the arrangements when we receive your booking.
