For full international removals, you'll need a specialist international removal company with experience of customs procedures, shipping documentation and delivery logistics in your destination country. Get at least three quotes and check all companies are members of the British Association of Removers (BAR) or equivalent professional body.

Price items competitively and arrange collections at fixed times on the same day to reduce the number of separate journeys needed. Charity shops will collect larger items from your home with 1–2 weeks' notice.

Before You Leave: Admin Checklist

• Redirect all post to a UK address (family or mail forwarding service)
• Notify HMRC of your departure and non-resident status
• Close or convert UK bank accounts to international accounts if needed
• Check your National Insurance contributions are up to date
• Arrange appropriate international health insurance
• Update your car insurance (UK policies typically don't cover driving abroad for extended periods)
