The Complete Address Change Checklist for Moving House
Changing your address is tedious but essential. Missing even one critical organisation can have serious consequences. Use this comprehensive checklist.
Government and Legal (Do First)
- HMRC — online at gov.uk/personal-tax-account
- DVLA driving licence (mandatory within 1 week; £1,000 fine if not updated)
- DVLA vehicle registration (V5C logbook)
- Electoral roll — re-register at gov.uk/register-to-vote
- NHS — re-register with a local GP and dentist
Financial
- All bank and building society accounts
- All credit cards and store cards
- PayPal, Apple Pay and digital wallets
- Pension provider(s) and investment accounts
- Premium Bonds (NS&I)
Insurance
- Home contents and buildings insurance — update immediately (incorrect address can invalidate your policy)
- Car insurance — incorrect address can void a claim
- Life, health, travel and pet insurance
Don't Forget: Royal Mail Redirection
Even with the most thorough address change effort, some organisations will miss the update. Set up Royal Mail redirection from royalmail.com for at least 6 months. From £33.99 for 3 months per person.
