Moving House in Winter: What You Need to Know

Winter moves have a reputation for being difficult, but with the right preparation they can actually be smoother than summer moves — less competition for van availability, cheaper rates and shorter waiting times.

The Advantages of a Winter Move

The removal industry's busiest months are May through September, with peak demand in July and August. Winter moves — November through February — benefit from greater availability, often better pricing and a more relaxed pace. If you can be flexible on moving date, winter can be genuinely advantageous.

Managing the Cold

Cold weather affects both the people carrying your belongings and the belongings themselves. Wood and MDF furniture can be damaged by sudden changes in temperature, so wrap furniture in moving blankets throughout the move. Electronics should be given time to reach room temperature before being switched on at the new property.

Ice and Snow Preparation

If snow or ice is forecast on your moving day, communicate with your removal company early. Most professional removal companies are experienced in winter moves and have appropriate protocols, but the timing of the day may need to be adjusted. Grip footwear for all team members is essential. Apply grit to slippery paths at both properties.

Darker Shorter Days

With sunset around 4pm in December and January, a late-starting winter move can mean finishing in the dark. Aim for an early start — 7:30am or 8am — to ensure you have sufficient daylight for most of the loading and unloading. Make sure outdoor lights are working at both properties.

Heating the New Property

If possible, arrange for the heating to be on at the new property before you arrive. Moving into a warm home makes an enormous difference to morale on a cold winter's day, and it also prevents condensation forming on warm furniture moved into a cold building.
