Moving House with Pets: A Stress-Free Guide for Dogs and Cats

Moving is stressful for humans — but for pets, who can't understand what's happening, it can be genuinely distressing. With the right preparation, you can significantly reduce the anxiety for your animals.

Preparation Starts Weeks Before

Get your pet used to their travel carrier well in advance. Leave it open in the house with familiar bedding inside so it becomes a normal, safe space rather than something strange and stressful that appears suddenly on moving day. For anxious animals, your vet may recommend an appropriate calming supplement for the journey.

On Moving Day

Keep pets in a single quiet room while the house is being loaded — the constant movement of removal teams carrying boxes and furniture through the house is one of the most stressful elements for animals. Put a sign on the door so removal teams know the room is occupied. Feed pets their normal breakfast at the normal time to maintain routine.

The Journey

Secure all animals properly for the journey. Dogs should be secured in a crate or with a travel harness. Cats must be in a secure carrier — even the most docile cat can become panicked in a moving vehicle. Never leave animals unattended in a vehicle, especially in warm weather.

At the New Home

Set up a 'safe room' at the new property before allowing pets to explore. Put familiar bedding, toys and feeding bowls in one room and let the pet settle there before opening up the rest of the house. Cats should be kept indoors for at least two to three weeks before being allowed outside to explore the new neighbourhood.

Updating Pet Records

Update your pet's microchip details with your new address online via PetLog or the manufacturer's database. Update your vet's records and, if moving area, register with a new vet before your old one is too far away for routine appointments.
