Student Mover's Guide: Moving Into and Out of University
What Do You Actually Need?
First-year halls provide more than you think: a bed, desk and wardrobe. You need bedding (check mattress size first — single or small double), towels, a kettle, a power strip, a desk lamp and your personal belongings. Leave everything else at home. Overpacking your first-year room is the most common student moving mistake.
Man With Van for Student Moves
A student move from a family home to university typically needs a medium Transit van and takes 2–3 hours. If you're moving with a flatmate going to the same area, share the van — split the cost and it becomes extremely affordable. Book at least 3 weeks before term starts — September van hire fills fast.
End-of-Year Moves
End-of-year moves are chaotic — every student in your block moves out in the same fortnight. Book your van well in advance. Pack at least two days before your move-out date. If you're moving into a shared house, coordinate with housemates so you all move in on the same day.
Student Storage Solutions
If you're going home for summer but returning in September, storage makes more sense than transporting everything twice. A small storage unit for one room's possessions costs £15–£30 per week. Our student storage packages include collection from your halls and delivery back in September.
